Review: 2024 MG HS Essence

Following the overhaul of the charming MG3, MG continues to revamp its existing lineup with the arrival of the new-generation 2024 MG HS.

We recently spent the weekend experiencing the top-of-the-range Essence trim of this affordable, family SUV testing it out in the suburban setting where it thrives.

Check out our thoughts.

Initial Impressions

What hit me immediately with the MG HS was the price tag. After spending the weekend with the HS, I was surprised to learn from our MG Sales Manager that it was priced about $10,000 below what I had estimated. For a brand known for affordability, MG has really stepped up its game with sophisticated design elements—the sweeping silhouette, minimalist rear spoiler, and sharp tailgate styling lend the HS a premium look.

The grinning grille and sharp, three-piece LED headlights give it a distinct personality, while the full-width rear light bar and chrome roof rails complete the package with elegant touches.

The HS follows the design language of the MG4 and new MG3, opting for a simple yet modern cabin. Soft-touch materials run throughout the cabin, with orange stitching adding subtle flair. It’s not flashy, but it doesn’t need to be. Piano black and silver trim highlight the dash and centre console, giving it just enough visual interest. The flat-bottom steering wheel borrowed from the MG4 adds a sporty vibe.

One thoughtful touch I appreciated was the wireless charging pad tucked under the centre armrest. This design keeps your phone safe from sliding around and makes it easy to charge without cluttering up the console.

Under the Hood

Under the hood, the MG HS is powered by a 1.5L turbo petrol engine paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, putting out 125kW and 275Nm. The combination provides just the right amount of grunt to handle city streets and highways alike.

Driving the HS, I was reminded of some of the Mazda SUVs I’ve tested—smooth and refined. The suspension absorbs road imperfections without feeling disconnected, and cornering feels stable even when pushed a bit harder.

Around town, it’s responsive, though engine noise is noticeable during stop-and-go traffic. On the highway, however, the HS shines—it’s quiet, smooth, and stable, with a ride quality that balances comfort and control.

The fuel economy for the new HS is quite reasonable and a decent improvement over the previous generation model. MG states a combined figure of just 6.9 litres per 100 kilometres.

Comfort & Space

The synthetic leather seats in the Essence trim are a standout. They come with six-way power adjustment as standard, with the added bonus of memory settings for the driver. On colder days, the heated front seats will keep things cozy.

The rear seats are spacious enough to fit adults comfortably, and the panoramic sunroof floods the cabin with light, making it feel even roomier. It’s one of those small touches that makes weekend family drives just a bit more special.

Cargo-wise, the HS offers 507 litres with the rear seats up, expanding to 1,484 litres with them folded down. That’s about middle-of-the-pack for this segment, but the power tailgate on the Essence makes loading easier, and the netted cubbies in the boot are perfect for keeping smaller items like first-aid kits or sunscreen from sliding around.

Infotainment & Technology

The HS is equipped with a 12.3-inch touchscreen that’s bright, responsive, and easy to navigate. With four large tiles dedicated to phone, music, climate, and navigation, you can find what you need quickly without much distraction.

Although wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto would’ve been ideal, the wired versions still provide seamless integration, ensuring your apps are ready to go whenever you plug in.

It’s great to see features like rain-sensing wipers offered even on the entry-level model—something many competitors reserve for higher trims.

Safety & Driver Assistance

MG has packed the HS with its Pilot Technology Safety suite, which is standard across the range. This includes adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, rear cross-traffic alert, and autonomous emergency braking.

Families will also appreciate the ISOFIX anchors and three top-tether points for child seats, making it a practical option for young families. This setup makes installation quick and hassle-free, ensuring the whole family is safe and secure on every journey.

Pricing

Now let’s talk value. The HS range starts with the Vibe trim at $37,013 drive away - remember this includes features such as rain-sensing wipers, adjustable and heated door mirrors, power adjustable driver's seat and a whole lot more.

The mid-tier Excite adds features like the 360-degree camera and sat-nav for $40,073, however, if you want everything MG has to offer, the Essence with all the bells and whistles, maxes out at $44,153 driveaway.

If you want a colour other than white, it’s just $700 extra, with five additional options available.

These prices are incredible value, and even better - they arrive on the back of the brand's biggest announcement of late. MG now includes a whopping 10-year, 250,000-kilometre warranty on every new car to give you the ultimate piece of mind. MG backs their vehicles and their technology so why shouldn't you?

Final Thoughts

The MG HS proves that affordable cars don’t have to feel cheap. It offers a winning mix of refined design, thoughtful tech, and real-world practicality.

Whether you’re looking for a comfortable family SUV or a stylish daily driver, the HS fits the bill without breaking the bank.

It’s perfect for families who want space, comfort and a little bit of style without breaking the bank.

MG’s ability to combine premium features at an accessible price makes this SUV an easy recommendation. It’s not just a car for the budget-conscious—it’s a car for anyone who appreciates value.

The HS doesn’t just meet expectations—it surpasses them.
